Rotary Coimbatore Manchester

The Rotary movement has celebrated 100 years service to the humanity . The Rotary Coimbatore Manchester is part of Rotary International District 3200 . Our club was formed in 2001-2002 based in Coimbatore. The Clubs in District 3200 are spread over part of the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamilnadu. The larger cities in our RI District are Coimbatore, Tirupur, Calicut and Cochin. We have 18 sister Rotary clubs in Coimbatore .All our members are of varied vocational classifications.

We have several service programs . We in our community services programme have been supporting a village community and the panchayat elementary school , medical camps for children and senior citizens , toilets at a few village schools for the girl child etc.

A large majority of the Clubs have weekly tea meetings. Our RI District is well known for its involvement in the avenue of Community Services.

Project Siruthuli

A peoples movement - `Siruthuli` is a Coimbatore based Non-profit NGO spearheaded by the captains of the local business houses. They have been in the process of sharpening their skills in expertise of water resource management and rain water harvesting. Simply, it is an endeavour that has helped to retain the existing water resources which were in a devastated condition. This is an organisation in Coimbatore that has helped in the resurrection of the local environment and water table. They started the task by desilting the water tanks in and around Coimbatore, true to saying" action speaks better than words". Coimbatore (Tamil: கோயம்புத்தூர்), also known as Kovai, is one of the major industrial cities in South India. It is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Coimbatore District. Coimbatore is well known for its textile industry and its engineering colleges. Coimbatore is also known as Koneyammanputhhur, which means birth-place of the goddess (koni amman).

Overview

Coimbatore, known as an industrial hub, is also dubbed the 'Manchester of South India'. It is also well known for educational institutions, its pleasant weather, friendly culture and exceptional hospitality. There is also a significant minority of people of North and West Indian origin in Coimbatore. People here are highly enterprising and industrious, which is one of the reasons cited for its phenomenal industrial growth. A boost for this industrial growth were provided by Naidus who settled here a few centuries before from Andhra Pradesh. This was followed by Gownders who are basically hardworking entrepreneurs. The nearest major cities are Chennai (previously Madras), Bangalore, Trichy, Cochin - sea port, Salem which are 500 km, 335 km, 232 km, 210km and 160 km from Coimbatore, respectively. Coimbatore city is well connected by rail, road and air.

Coimbatore has a very good health and medical care facility. There are large corporate hospitals where high quality and treatment for complicated illnesses are provided. The Tamil language spoken itself has a flavour of hospitality, and is referred to as 'Kongu Tamil'. Other than Tamil, the languages spoken in Coimbatore include Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and English.

Pollachi, a vibrant and expanding town, 40 km from Coimbatore, was known to the Romans of Caesar's day for its spices, as is evidenced by numerous Roman coins from that epoch unearthed in Coimbatore district. During Alexander the Great's stay in India, he ordered diamonds from Coimbatore. Coimbatore has experienced 6.0 Richter Scale earthquake in the past (It is classified as Class III/IV Zone) which brought black soil up thus making the region fertile. Coimbatore district exports Rs.15,000 Crores outside India. A PriceWaterHouseCoopers study puts its revenue potential from IT/ITES sector at $1.5 billion.Coimbatore City is one of the top 10 fastest growing cities of India. Coimbatore district has a population of about 42.25 Lakhs (Census in 2001). Coimbatore is also a district capital. There are more than 25,000 small, medium, large scale industries and textile mills.During the British raj Coimbatore was the capital of the district of Coimbatore in Madras, British India, situated on the River Noyyal. In independent India Coimbatore District comprises the major towns of Tirupur, Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Palladam. It is number one revenue district in the state of Tamil Nadu with revenues crossing more than Rs. 6000 Crores annually.

Sir Robert Stanes, P.S.G & Sons Charities, G.D. Naidu , G. Kuppuswamy Naidu, Dr. G.K. Devarajulu and Dharmaveera K Govindaswamy Naidu are some of the leaders responsible for the industrial revolution in Coimbatore. Coimbatore is a leading producer of textile yarn and machinery. Coimbatore is also the motorsports capital of India.

Coimbatore is a busy city with a good business infrastructure, (power, roads, rail, highly skilled manpower and low pollution). Many foundries and engineering companies are present in and on the outskirts of the city. Coimbatore is road, rail and air route nexus connecting three states - Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala. Coimbatore is now developing into a major poultry hub in India. Major poultry industries are concentrated around Palladam, Pongalur and Udumalpet.

The motor pump revolution in Coimbatore was started by the noteworthy Sharp group. The Sharp group introduced the first ever mini-monobloc pumps in India. This type of pump became so famous that the market even named all the mini-monobloc pumps. In Coimbatore, largest denim manufacturer named KG DENIM LIMITED.

People and Culture

The people of Coimbatore are cultured, known for their hospitality and are well educated and polite. The city is a multicultural society with a large Tamil speaking community. A large number of Kannada -, Telegu - and Malayalam -speaking people are also present. Also Rajasthanis and Gujaratis are found in large numbers.

Coimbatore has been a major center for higher education from the early 1900s. Coimbatore has an Agricultural University, several Government and private engineering colleges, two medical colleges and a number of science and arts colleges. The most famous is the PSG College of Technology whose annual Design Data Book is the engineering industry's bible.

The major food is rice based south Indian dishes (often spicy) like Boiled Rice, Idly, Dosa, Pongal etc. North Indian foods like Chappathi, Roti, Biriyani, Naan are also available in most restaurants and eateries. Coimbatore also has several Chinese restaurants, continental food restaurants and fast food restaurants.

Cinema, shopping and go-carting are popular recreational activities. There is a golf club on the Pollachi Highway at Chettipalayam. The Kari Motor Speedway is a racing heaven for autosport enthusiasts. There are three go-carting centers,at Kari Motor Speedway, at Chinniyampalayam, Avanashi Road and another at Thudiyalur. The Kasturi Srinivasan Cultural Center exhibits rare arts and also has a Textile Museum. The G.D.Naidu Industrial exhibition at Avinashi Road is of interest.

Religion

The culture of the region has been centered mostly around religion, with only a few non-religious festivals taking place each year. Coimbatore, like most other places in South India, has a number of old and historically important temples. Hinduism is the dominant religion, but Islam, Christianity, Jainism and Sikhism are also present in Coimbatore.

Even though Coimbatore is not a pilgrimage center or a place of religious significance, there are still a number of noteworthy Temples. Some of the more important Temples include the Lord Shiva (Patteswarar) temple at Perur, The Sri Murugan Temple at Marthumalai, the Thandumariamman Temple, the Arulmigu Eachanari Vinayagar Temple at Eachanari , Arulmigu Koniamman Temple, the Sivan Temple at Poondi. A beautiful replica of TIRUPATI-TIRMALA temple is situated in Then Thirumalai 40 km north of coimbatore


Ecclesiastical history

The city's population in 1901 was 53,080 including 3,000 Catholics. The diocese embraced the colonial Collectorate of Coimbatore (except the Taluk of the Collegal), the Nilgiris with the south-eastern Wynaad, the Taluks of Palgat, Collancodoo, Tamalpuram and part of Wallavanad, the Chittur Taluks and the Nelliampathy Hills in the Cochin territory. In 1846 Coimbatore was separated from the Vicariate Apostolic of Pondicherry, and in 1850 was made a vicariate Apostolic. On 1 September 1886, it was constituted a diocese, and the Right Rev. Joseph Louis Bardon, Titular Bishop of Telmessus, who had been vicar Apostolic, was chosen as its bishop.

The total population of the diocese in the early 20th century was 2,500,000, of whom 37,080 are Catholics inclduing 41 European and 13 native priests and 14 ecclesiastical seminary students. The diocese had 2 religious communities of men and 3 of women. There were for boys a second-grade college, a middle school, and a high school; and for girls eighteen convent schools; also 67 elementary schools, with 4239 pupils. There were 2 hospitals, 4 orphanages and an industrial school.

The Nilgiri's biosphere reserve is an hour's drive from Coimbatore. The Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats near Pollachi, about 90 km from Coimbatore. The Anamalai wildlife sanctuary covers an area of 958 km². Animals like the tiger, elephant, Nilgiri Tahr, sloth bear, black headed oriole can be seen here. Coimbatore also enjoys close proximity with the Mudumalai Wildlife sanctuary (renowned for its elephant rides) and the famed Silent Valley National Park, which is a birdwatchers' paradise.
